Baltimore Moving Checklist for Families and Students

Planning a Move in Baltimore

Moving to a new apartment, rowhouse, house, or student residence in Baltimore? Use this checklist to prepare for moving day. Building access, curb space, stairs, and move-in windows can vary from one address to another, so plan for both pickup and delivery.

Confirm whether each address is in Baltimore City or Baltimore County when you check parking and building rules. Ask the property manager or the relevant local authority what applies to your street rather than assuming the same instructions cover both locations.

Four to six weeks before your move

  • List the furniture, appliances, and boxes you plan to move.
  • Confirm pickup and delivery addresses and your preferred moving date.
  • Ask your building about elevator reservations, loading access, and permitted moving hours.
  • Check parking restrictions for moving trucks at both locations.

Student Moving in Baltimore

Students moving into or out of apartments near Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, or other local campuses often have smaller loads but tighter schedules. Check your lease and campus move-in or move-out dates early. Ask your residence or building about loading zones, elevator reservations, and parking. Before requesting a quote, list any desks, mattresses, furniture, and boxes you need moved.

Moving between semesters? Plan ahead for lease gaps and ask about packing or storage options if needed. See our Baltimore storage services and packing and unpacking services.

Check Access and Parking at Both Addresses

Walk the path from each entrance to the location where loading may take place. Note stairs, narrow doorways, long carries, and any furniture that might need disassembly. If you are moving from a multiunit building, ask who can reserve the elevator and whether movers must use a specific entrance or loading window.

For curbside loading in Baltimore City, confirm local restrictions before moving day. If reserving or occupying part of a public right of way is needed, ask the Baltimore City Department of Transportation about the applicable process. Do not assume a temporary sign or permit is needed for every address. For an address outside the city, check with the authority responsible for that location.

One to two weeks before your move

  • Label boxes by room and pack an essentials bag.
  • Measure large furniture, doorways, and staircases.
  • Confirm access instructions and review your moving estimate.

The Day Before Your Move

  • Confirm the planned arrival window and the best point of contact at each address.
  • Set aside keys, identification, medication, chargers, and items needed on your first night.
  • Photograph complicated furniture before disassembly and separate anything that will travel with you.
  • Check whether reserved elevators or loading arrangements are still confirmed.

On moving day

  • Keep important documents, medication, and valuables with you.
  • Have your inventory and contact information ready.
  • Check each room before leaving and after delivery.
